The Scourge of Kanethar
Walraven is a town that spans the great chasm known as the Skrij Depths. The city was built after The Cataclysm opened the land directly beneath the Gnomish homeland. The Gnomes were split and separated from each other, but thanks to a limited amount of communication facilitated by the Gnomes’ adeptness with elemental magic, they were able to collaborate and build what ended up to be one of the greatest feats of magic and engineering in all of Kanethar. The two divided peoples, separated by miles of open chasm, built two cities connected by a massive bridge made of solid rock and earth pulled from the chasm walls themselves. The bridge is over 20 miles long and a quarter mile wide, with stone struts and supports connected miles beneath the edge of the chasm to hold it in place. In order to keep the bridge solid, Gnomish elemental mages used fire and earth magic to fuse each stone together so that not one drop of mortar was needed in the bridge’s construction, and the entire bridge looks as if it were built from a single piece of rock.. The construction took 5 generations of Gnomes and almost 200 years to complete.
The completion of Walraven reunited the Western reaches for the first time in the 200 years since the Cataclysm. Trade brought incredible wealth to the city, and also to the little inns and settlements that sprung up along the edges of the bridge to welcome travelers who were unable to complete the journey across the bridge in a single day.
The city of Walraven and the bridge is still threatened occasionally by aftershocks and tremors from The Cataclysm, along with the occasional shifting of the Chasm walls itself. This friction has caused the occasional cracks to appear in the structure of the bridge. Gnomish artisans and mages are well employed continuously fixing the bridge.
